Re-Designing the Burgundy and Blue

When you have a hometown team it's hard not to be a fan. My hometown team is the burgundy and blue. The Colorado Avalanche. Although I am a huge Avs fan, I can admit we're not perfect. Not even close to be honest. Not perfect as a team, and most certainly not perfect from a design standpoint. The Avalanche have beautiful logos and colors but the Reebok Edge era has absolutely ruined them. There needs to be a jersey change and this portion of my blog will be dedicated to that mission.

What we have...

In 2007 the NHL was introduced the the Reebok Edge era. Colorado's old "mountain" jerseys were dropped and a new uniform was introduced. Here we have those current uniforms.

In 2007 the home and away were introduced. I honestly have never heard a nice word about them. In 2009, the alternate was released but I honestly like it. A lot in fact. That is why we'll be focusing on the home and away.

Is this a joke? It looks like John Michael Liles was cooking before the game and forgot to take off his apron. I'm okay with some piping but his just looks ridiculous. The whole jersey just looks like some designer was tired and just want used the paint bucket tool wherever he could. Different colored arms can be okay but these just make Liles look like he has a cape on from a front view. Also, what's up with the side panels and where did they come from?

The away jersey is pretty much the same story but my biggest problem is with the lettering. I have no problem with black in an Avs jersey but I don't like the black numbers and names. On the away jersey itself there is absolutely NO black other than the small portion in the logo. Even the home jersey has black. I don't understand why the Avs are afraid to try burgundy numbers. The shade is dark enough that it would look good.

My Solution...

Over time I have created many Avalanche concepts. Some that work, and some that don't. Recently I created this design and have gotten a very good reaction from it. So this, for now at least, is my solution.

I would love to hear feedback and there will be more to come on this subject very soon!

  1. I love your update. Striping is much more "hockey" than the... "thing" the Avs wear (I'm staying polite!). I never got used to the colors though...

  2. This really looks cool. You really have some great designs on here. You should submit them to sportsconceptart.blogspot.com too.

  3. i like these a lot as well. Nice traditional look. If it's not going back to the pre-edge design this is the way to go.

To offer my opinion on the black numbers, i think it's there to bring balance with the black pants and gloves, otherwise those will look even worse. I don't mind them at all.

  4. These look really cool! I would add the alternate and not change it, even the black pits look decent.
